Fabinho ruled out West Ham clash; Matip injury possibly not serious

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Fabinho is definitely out of Liverpool’s Premier League meeting with West Ham, also admitting Joel Matip’s injury may not be as serious as first feared.

The Reds head to the London Stadium on Sunday afternoon, but will have to make do without a single established centre-back.

Fabinho and Matip join Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez on the treatment table, meaning Jordan Henderson and Nathaniel Phillips will likely start in defence against the fifth-place Hammers.

Speaking in his press conference on Friday, Klopp provided an update of both Fabinho and Matip, with potential positivity regarding the latter:

The hope is that Matip will not be out for an extended period, with initial reports that he had injured his ankle ligaments at Spurs.

The Cameroonian is such a key player without Van Dijk and Gomez around, and a long-term issue would only make signing a new centre-back even more important.

Meanwhile, Fabinho is going to be a huge loss against an in-form Hammers outfit on Sunday, as he continues his own recovery.

Henderson and Phillips were excellent in the second half on Thursday, which bodes well ahead of a taxing game.
