Jurgen Klopp ‘still has an eye on a midfielder’ to replace Wijnaldum but faces one key issue

Liverpool have been relatively quiet in the transfer window so far this summer.

The club has completed the signing of Ibrahima Konaté from RB Leipzig as well as offload some of the squad.

So far Georginio Wijnaldum, Harry Wilson, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Marko Grujic have all departed the club.

The departure of Wijnaldum is the most particularly difficult to deal with, having left a hole in the squad.

The Dutchman had become an integral part of Jurgen Klopp’s system over the last few years.

Now, it seems as though the German is keen to find a replacement midfielder this summer, but there’s an issue.

According to The Mirror’s David Maddock, Klopp is under pressure to sell before dipping into the market…

As cited by Anfield Watch above, the Reds are at their limit for non-homegrown players in the squad.

Currently, the club has 17 players on their books that do not have homegrown status.

This means for the club to be able to sign any other players without homegrown status, they will need to offload.

A number of the club’s first-team have been linked with moves away including Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi.

The pair have been of interest to a number of other teams this summer but no concrete offers have been received.

Still, it is great to hear that Klopp is still eyeing up the idea of a new midfielder to replace Wijnaldum.

Not doing so would be a big mistake given how important he became for the club and the unique role he played.

A number of players get linked with the club every transfer window, but hopefully, the Reds will find the perfect replacement.
