“I still feel them.” Darwin Nunez opens up about his special bond with Liverpool fans in a moving interview during his time away with the Uruguay squad.
Darwin Nunez left Anfield last summer after a hot-and-cold spell on Merseyside, but he still has fond memories of his time at Liverpool.
Indeed, despite his inconsistent goalscoring form – which saw him only bag a disappointing 40 goals from 143 appearances – the 26-year-old was a fan favourite at points for his passion and energy, when donning Liverpool red.
Moreover, to write off his 143-game stay as a failure would be harsh, as Nunez was a part of the side that lifted the Premier League title only last season under Arne Slot, while he also hoisted the EFL Cup and Community Shield aloft during his up-and-down tenure.
It’s just so much more would have been expected of the Uruguayan, after he scored a lethal 48 goals for his former side Benfica, in only 85 games.
Thankfully, Liverpool managed to gain £46m back last summer, when offloading the 26-year-old to Al-Hilal, and he was back on English shores with Uruguay over the international break, as Marcelo Bielsa’s men faced England at Wembley.
Only managing to feature for three minutes against the Three Lions, Nunez also took the time out to discuss his connection with Liverpool supporters on the nation’s X account, with his emotions coming to the forefront.
Nunez’s emotional comments
The Anfield masses are well-known all over the world for being an impassioned and supportive group of supporters.
Indeed, ex-Reds striker Michael Owen even said to ReadLiverpool recently that he believes the Reds fanbase trumps the likes of Real Madrid’s and Manchester United’s.
Nunez certainly remembers the roar of the Anfield contingent and their togetherness when sitting down to reflect on his Liverpool career briefly.
He said: “I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss them [the people of Liverpool]. The truth is, they made me feel very welcome, and my family too.
“During some difficult times I went through personally, the people always gave me that affection, that support, and that was very important to me, and obviously I miss Liverpool.”
While Nunez often frustrated with his lack of cutting edge, with an agonising 27 big chances squandered during the 2023/24 season in the Premier League, it’s heart-warming to hear how much affection he felt he was given, even when times were tough on Merseyside.
Struggling to get firing at Al-Hilal, with only nine goals from 24 appearances in the Middle East, it will be intriguing to see where Nunez’s well-travelled career takes him next.
Obviously, a talented striker on his day, wherever he goes next across his playing days, or if he stays at Al-Hilal, it’s clear to see that he will always have space for Liverpool in his heart.
