Liverpool News: Arne Slot addresses the ‘Inevitable’ challenges of succeeding Klopp

Arne Slot has laid bare the realities of his disastrous second season at Liverpool. In his pre-match press conference for the Fulham fixture, Slot delivered a blunt evaluation of the Reds struggles, offering fans a rare, unfiltered look at the challenges he’s faced at the helm.

With Arne Slot lifting the Premier League proudly aloft last season during his debut campaign in the dug-out, Liverpool fans everywhere must have thought they’d struck instant gold, unearthing a top successor for Jurgen Klopp.

However, it’s been a horrible hangover from that memorable title lift this season, with 17 defeats in all competitions now, which included the Community Shield loss on penalties at the hands of Crystal Palace to kick off the campaign.

The Eagles winning on penalties at Wembley should have been a warning that dark clouds were on their way to Anfield, instead of bright skies, with Liverpool desperately needing to pick up wins now, in the Premier League, to try and leap into the top four positions.

With Liverpool soon to wave goodbye to loyal club servants Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson, too, it feels as if there is major change on the horizon on Merseyside, after Slot once felt like a settling presence, right after Klopp’s departure.

Slot has candidly offered his thoughts on the rebuild ahead, with the Dutchman boldly stating that last season’s title win only “postponed” the inevitable revamp of the club following the German’s successful reign.

Slot’s bold “postponed” comments

Several mainstays of the decorated Klopp era appear to be entering their final years on Merseyside.

Away from Salah and Robertson already confirming their exits, Virgil Van Dijk isn’t getting younger, as the Dutch colossus – who is now 34 years of age – enters the final year of his Reds contract, come June.

All of this would have been easy to avoid for Slot when he immediately entered the building, but now, the work needs to be done to steer Liverpool into a positive new dawn.

For the ex-Feyenoord boss, unfortunately, it hasn’t quite worked out this campaign – with £446m splashed on new players as he believes the Reds next cycle of their journey was halted by the drama of an instant Premier League title triumph.

He said: “It is normal in football that you have cycles. I’m really happy that Mo and Robbo have worked with all of the signings we did last summer because they have been able to see what the club means to them and how hard they work.

“That is a normal process at successful clubs, or any club, that there is an end to a cycle. That’s not something that is new to us. The great thing is that we maybe postponed that cycle with last season.”

Irrespective of cycles, it’s clear that Slot needs to pick up wins fast to ease some of the intense pressure on his back.

Amazingly, though, the 47-year-old has reiterated that the Fenway Sports Group have constantly backed him and supported him, even when results have been poor, with Slot further stating that he feels the love from certain sections of supporters, who have stuck by him during recent challenging times.

“We are definitely aligned” – Slot believes he has Liverpool backing

Of course, words are just words at the end of the day, with a public backing, often then followed up by brutal sacking.

The under-fire head coach believes he has the full backing of all the powers that be at Anfield, from sporting director Richard Hughes to chief executive Michael Edwards, with the warmth of the fanbase also still being felt.

He has further stated: “It’s not about every day they are saying: ‘We support you, we support you.’ It is talking through what we see is happening and, sometimes, it is not always needed to say: ‘I am supporting you,’ but you can feel that support. I’ve felt that support since I’ve been here.

“I cannot tell you what we are saying to each other but I think, and I don’t know what people are writing, but I think we all see the same. By that I mean the ownership, Richard, Michael, everyone.

“Everyone sees what is happening in front of our eyes and we are all aligned in what we are seeing. We are definitely aligned in what we are seeing and on the reasons for it.”

Ending the tell-all interview by stating that everyone is “aligned”, it will be fascinating to see if all this talk holds up, if the defeats continue to pile high.

For the time being, it does appear as if Slot has time on his side to turn his dire fortunes around, with a win against Fulham an ideal way to boost confidence.
