- Arne Slot is under increasing pressure at Liverpool after losing three games in a row
- FSG have so far refused to sack the Dutchman
- He may be running out of time at Anfield
Despite the mounting pressure of a title defense gone off-script, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot remains steadfast, insisting he retains the “full backing” of both the boardroom and the Anfield faithful.
As Liverpool’s season continues to unravel across all competitions, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) finds itself at a crossroads regarding the future of Arne Slot.
Despite the team’s persistent struggles on the pitch, Sporting Director Richard Hughes remains a key figure in the unfolding drama, as the hierarchy weighs the merits of patience against the urgent need to halt the Reds’ decline.
The Reds are on the verge of bowing out of their third and final cup competition after losing 2-0 against Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday, 8 April.
Their run in the European competition will come to an end if PSG manage to survive another 90 minutes at Anfield on Tuesday, 14 April, which, at this moment in time, does not seem like much of a challenge.
Liverpool are currently placed fifth in the Premier League, sitting just a point above Chelsea with seven games left.
Failing to secure a Champions League spot will prove to be a major financial blow for the club, and that is why FSG must make a shrewd decision over Slot before it is too late.
Slot reveals Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes stance
However, it appears that FSG are steadfast in their decision not to sack Slot at least until the end of the season.
Neither the team’s results nor the financial implications of missing out on Champions League football have been able to change their mind.
Asked if the result against PSG has shifted the owners’ stance, Slot explained that he still has their, as well as Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes’, support.
The former Feyenoord boss also admitted that he feels support from the fans, too, despite their frustrations.
He insisted in his pre Fulham press conference (10 April): “I have said many times I feel a lot of support from the owners and from Richard [Hughes] and Michael [Edwards] as well, and as weird as it might sound, I also feel the support of the fans. When we went for a walk around Paris before the game, even though we’d just lost 4-0 at City, the fans started singing ‘We love you, Liverpool’.
“After we were outplayed for 90 minutes, they were still singing for us at the away end. We have felt that support constantly. The club know the period of time we are in, and in the meantime, I have their complete support.”
Liverpool eye first win in four v Fulham
PSG’s poor finishing on Wednesday has allowed the six-time European champions to stay in the tie, which will now be determined on Tuesday.
However, Slot’s men have a Premier League fixture against Fulham coming up at Anfield on Saturday, 11 April.
This offers the Merseyside-based club the opportunity to register their first victory in four matches across all competitions.
A solid win against the Cottagers could also give them some confidence to take into the clash with Luis Enrique side and turn around a two goal deficit.
