Liverpool starlet Rio Ngumoha had reportedly reached a verbal agreement on personal terms with Bayern Munich. However, any potential blockbuster move has swiftly fallen through, with Anfield chiefs firmly maintaining that the wonderkid is “not for sale.”
Despite heavy interest from the Bundesliga giants, the 17-year-old winger is fully expected to remain on Merseyside this summer.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein initially broke the news of Bayern’s pursuit, revealing that Ngumoha had become the German club’s “main target” to reinforce the left side of their attack.
Verbal agreements and collapsed talks
The transfer saga apparently moved fast behind the scenes. Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg claims the situation advanced to a “complete verbal agreement” between Ngumoha and Bayern, should a club-to-club fee ever be settled. The teenager even allegedly held “personal talks” with Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany.
However, Ornstein reports that no official contact has been made between the two clubs. With Liverpool refusing to entertain any bids for their No. 73, Plettenberg confirmed that the deal “fell through for the time being” on Thursday.
Bayern have already pivoted to alternative left-sided targets, including Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown and PSV Eindhoven’s Ismael Saibari. On X, Plettenberg noted:
“If both deals go through, it’s very likely that no additional left winger will be signed.”
A rapid rise under Slot and looking ahead to Iraola
The timing and accuracy of Bayern’s sudden push have raised eyebrows, especially since Ngumoha appears settled on Merseyside. The youngster was one of the brightest sparks to emerge from Arne Slot’s second campaign in charge.
While Slot was initially hesitant to blood academy products into the first team, Ngumoha’s undeniable talent eventually forced his hand.
Amid a highly disappointing season from Cody Gakpo, Ngumoha seized his opportunity, injecting life back into the Anfield crowd with a string of dazzling performances toward the end of the season.
With Vincent Kompany’s Bayern eager to find a reliable backup to Luis Diaz—who swapped Liverpool for Bavaria in the 2025-26 window and enjoyed a stellar season—Ngumoha became their prime target after Anthony Gordon chose Barcelona instead.
However, a move away makes little sense for the youngster, who is now uniquely positioned to heavily feature under incoming manager Andoni Iraola. Ngumoha himself made his feelings about Anfield very clear back in April:
“Liverpool for me are the biggest club in the world. To start so young and the manager and all the players having belief in me. I’ve just got to keep working hard.”

With Mohamed Salah departing this summer, the Reds are already facing a major headache in the wide areas. While the club has been linked with the likes of Yan Diomande, Michael Olise, and Bazoumana Toure, losing a homegrown talent of Ngumoha’s caliber would have sent shockwaves through the fanbase and triggered serious questions about the club’s direction.
Liverpool has always prided itself on a clear pathway from the academy to the first team. If a generational talent like Ngumoha felt forced to pack his bags for Germany, it would set a damaging precedent for the rest of the club’s youth prospects.
Fortunately, the player loves the club, and the board has blocked the exit door. Ngumoha’s electrifying performances at the end of last season should put him in prime position to start the opening game of the season.
Hopefully, Andoni Iraola recognises the immense talent at his disposal and hands this special young winger the platform he richly deserves.
