Ibrahima Konate has officially joined Real Madrid on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract at Liverpool, signing a four-year deal with the Spanish club.
The long-rumoured summer shakeup at Anfield has reached its latest crossover signing. Liverpool FC and Real Madrid have both officially confirmed that French central defender Ibrahima Konaté will move to the Santiago Bernabéu on a free transfer once his contract expires on June 30.
The 27-year-old has put pen to paper on a four-year deal with the La Liga giants Real Madrid, keeping him in the Spanish capital until June 2030.
A sudden breakdown in contract negotiations
For a long time, Konaté’s future seemed destined to mirror that of former teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold, who drew the ire of the Anfield faithful by running down his contract to join Los Blancos a year ago. However, mid-season reports suggested that Konaté was eager to avoid similar acrimony, actively seeking an extension to remain on Merseyside.
While negotiations between Liverpool and the defender’s representatives were progressing positively during the winter, talks ultimately collapsed. With no compromise reached, Konaté announced in May that his five-year stint in the Premier League would come to a close.
In an official statement, Liverpool FC expressed their appreciation for his service:
“Konaté will depart with our gratitude and appreciation for the contribution he made, and everyone at the club wishes him the best for the future.”
Five years of silverware and success
Konaté arrives in Madrid with a highly decorated resume. Since his £36 million switch from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021, the powerhouse defender became a staple of Liverpool’s backline
Over his five seasons at the club, Konaté accumulated 183 appearances and chipped in with seven goals. He leaves England having helped the Reds secure a historic haul of silverware, including:
- 1 Premier League Title
- 1 FA Cup
- 2 League Cups
Anfield’s summer of mass exodus
Konaté’s departure marks yet another high-profile exit in what is turning into a massive transitional phase for Liverpool. The club is reeling from a disappointing campaign that saw them finish fifth in the Premier League a staggering 25 points behind champions Arsenal.
The French international joins an astonishing list of summer departures, including:
- Mohamed Salah (Contract expiry)
- Andrew Robertson (Departure)
- Arne Slot (Sacked/Departed as Head Coach)
To spearhead the rebuild, Liverpool have already appointed former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola as their new manager. The club has also moved swiftly to plug the gap left by Konaté, previously securing a £60 million deal for highly-rated 20-year-old French prodigy Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes.
International frustrations
While his club future is now locked in, Konaté is currently facing a frustrating spell on the international stage. He was an unused substitute in France’s opening 3-1 victory over Senegal at the 2026 World Cup, with Les Bleus manager Didier Deschamps opting for a central defensive pairing of Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba.
Nevertheless, a fresh start under the bright lights of Madrid awaits the defender once his international duties conclude.
