Andoni Iraola lands first major Liverpool signing with €40m Víctor Munoz swoop

Andoni Iraola secures his first major Liverpool signing as the Reds beat Newcastle to Víctor Muñoz. The 22-year-old winger has agreed a six-year deal.

Liverpool have stunned the transfer market by hijacking Newcastle United’s move for Osasuna winger Víctor Muñoz. In a swift, late-night development on Wednesday evening, the Reds moved decisively to trigger the €40 million (£34.6m) release clause in the 22-year-old’s contract, leaving St James’ Park chiefs blindsided by the sudden turn of events.

Anfield officials acted with total discretion to steal a march on their Premier League rivals. While Newcastle spent days haggling over a structured package with the La Liga outfit, Liverpool recruitment staff watched from the wings before striking efficiently at 11 PM, In a move that directly mirrors the club’s legendary, out-of-nowhere signing of Fabinho in 2018.

It evokes immediate memories of the Fabinho signing zero media circus, zero prolonged sagas, just total efficiency. While Newcastle wasted time trying to shave a few million off the price, the 20 times Premier League champions acted like a big club, walked in, and paid the clause.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano the Barcelona-born attacker has already agreed personal terms on a six-year contract that commits his long-term future to Anfield until 2032.

Inside the Tyneside hijack

Muñoz had looked destined for Tyneside. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe had earmarked the Spanish international as the ideal, direct replacement for Anthony Gordon, who recently departed for Barcelona in a high-profile £70 million deal. Newcastle believed they were closing in on a package worth just over €30 million, but their hesitation proved fatal.

Liverpool capitalised on that dawdling. Rather than entering a protracted negotiation process with Osasuna, Anfield chiefs Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards simply informed the Spanish club of their intent to meet the release clause in full.

The club has moved the administrative process along at a relentless pace. Liverpool medical staff have already flown out to the United States, where Muñoz is currently stationed on World Cup duty with the Spain squad.

Although the winger remained an unused substitute during Spain’s disappointing 0-0 draw with Cape Verde on Monday, he expects to undergo his medical examinations in America over the next 24 hours. The forward hopes to finalise his Anfield switch well before earning his third international cap against Saudi Arabia on Sunday.

Real Madrid set for windfall

The structure of the deal also guarantees a massive financial windfall for Real Madrid, highlighting the intricate nature of modern Spanish transfer agreements.

Los BlanInstead, Madrid will pocket a staggering 50% of the transfer fee—amounting to roughly £17.3 million—due to a heavy sell-on clause inserted into his Osasuna contract last summer.cos originally sold Muñoz to Osasuna just 12 months ago for a meager €5 million (£4.1m) after the player progressed through the academy ranks in the capital from the age of 17.

As part of that initial sale, Madrid retained a right of first refusal and a £35 million buy-back option. Bernabéu officials briefly considered invoking that option this month but ultimately decided against re-signing the forward.

Muñoz, who actually spent a brief period in the Barcelona youth setup at age 13 before moving to Madrid, enjoyed a sensational breakout campaign in La Liga last year.

His market value skyrocketed from €5 million to €30 million over the course of nine months as he registered seven goals and five assists across 36 appearances.

He also announced himself on the international stage in March, scoring a superb goal on his senior Spain debut against Serbia. His electric pace, direct dribbling style, and lethal counter-attacking threat made him an unmissable market opportunity once Liverpool learned of his availability.

Iraola’s first major statement

The acquisition represents the first major attacking signing of the Andoni Iraola era at Anfield. While Liverpool previously secured agreements for teenage Austrian defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe for an initial £2.6 million, and wrapped up a marquee £60 million deal for Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet back in February, Muñoz represents the first frontline addition under the new Spanish head coach.

Iraola inherited a squad with plenty of transition ahead, and he quickly identified the left-wing berth as a priority area for elite reinforcement this summer.

By moving ruthlessly to secure one of La Liga’s brightest young talents ahead of a direct Premier League rival, the Liverpool hierarchy have delivered a major statement of intent for the new head coach.

This represents a classic, opportunistic market strike that catches the entire footballing world off guard. For weeks, the media narrative suggested Newcastle had a clear, unobstructed run at Muñoz.

However, the Liverpool recruitment team has shown the kind of ruthless efficiency that defined their best transfer windows, triggering the clause the exact moment Newcastle dithered over the price.

At £34.6 million, Muñoz represents extraordinary value in an inflated market. He fits the precise profile Fenway Sports Group covets: young, highly productive, tactile, and possessing a ceiling that Iraola can develop significantly over the next six years.

Securing him right from under the nose of Newcastle not only deals a bitter psychological blow to a top-four rival, but it also solves a pressing depth issue on the left flank before pre-season training even begins. This is an emphatic way for Iraola to kickstart his Anfield tenure.
