Liverpool are reportedly ‘plotting a swoop’ for Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz.

The Reds have been named alongside Premier League rivals Arsenal as those keen on signing the Brazilian.

This comes as new Villa boss and Anfield legend Steven Gerrard looks to further bolster the midfield with the capture of Juventus ace Rodrigo Bentancur – perhaps clearing the way for a 23-year-old Luiz to depart.

According to Fichajes journalist Ekrem Konur on Twitter, Liverpool are in the running to land the former Manchester City starlet.

Furthermore, it would appear that the Midlands club are keen to tie down the five-cap Brazil ace as interest arises from the top-flight.

This season Luiz has so far provided three assists in 17 league outings – earning a 6.96 average Sofascore rating in the process.

Valued at £31.5million and in the final 18 months of a deal at Villa Park (Transfermarkt), it’s perhaps no surprise to see the Brazilian’s current club act nor to see forthcoming interest.

Described as being ‘ready to be one of the best midfield players’ in the top-flight by Ian Wright, Luiz has come to the fore since making the £15million switch to Aston Villa (BBC).

Predominantly a defensive-minded operator, the Rio de Janeiro-born star would be the perfect candidate to supplement his compatriot Fabinho in Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

With it being unlikely that Klopp would sanction the move now, Liverpool’s best hope could be that any Arsenal swoop fails and Villa are unable to tie down their man before the summer window opens.
