Ex-Reds keeper expects Klopp to replace Mignolet

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar has told talkSPORT that he expects Jurgen Klopp to replace Simon Mignolet in the near-future.

Grobbelaar has admitted that he doesn’t rate the Belgian international highly and claims that Liverpool officials even spoke to him, asking him to stop criticising the 27-year-old.

He said:

I’ve had my criticism of Mignolet for two or three years, I even got pulled in and asked not to criticise him so openly.

Grobbelaar, who won six league titles and one European Cup during his 13-year stint at Anfield, says that while he thinks Mignolet is a fine shot-stopper, the other facets of his game are not good enough for a club like Liverpool, and says that there are goalkeepers in Canada, where he is currently coaching, who possess the same attributes as the Belgian.

I’ve said that he is a goalkeeper who is a great shot stopper, but he is not the overall package. The overall package is [being] good with your feet and coming out and commanding your area. I’ve got a goalkeeper in Canada, a 24-year-old, who does this better than Mignolet does and is just as good of a shot stopper. He is more of a package than Mignolet is.

The 53-year-old Zimbabwean also claimed that Klopp is looking to his native Germany to look for a replacement for Mignolet and that a new goalkeeper will be one of the first issues that the new manager will look to address in the January transfer window.

I think he is looking at [getting a replacement for Mignolet]. There are a couple of goalkeepers in the German league that he is looking at so I can see that might be one of his first signings.
