It’s sometimes easy as football fans to criticise targets of the club you support. If we had a pound for every time we see or hear someone giving their opinion with “Why don’t they go for him?” we’d all be pretty well off. Especially those of us who like to use Twitter, and especially if you follow some people who see themselves as transfer gurus.
The reality is, it doesn’t always work like that. The football transfer market is a dark place, filled with more tapping up conversations than FIFA/UEFA etc. would ever care to admit to. The likelihood is that the players people want their club to sign has already been scouted by them. If the scout reports are positive, there’s probably been a conversation to gage interest. If there’s none, clubs will simply move on.
Liverpool’s committee gets more bad press than most teams in terms of transfers. The truth is that most clubs already have a committee type approach when it comes to signing players, but Liverpool made a PR mistake by naming theirs!
Identifying good players seems an easy job to fans though. Anyone who watches football regularly will trust their ability to spot a talented player. In fact, us lot at TBT decided to do a small study to see exactly who Liverpool would target if the fans got to decide transfers. We know that there’s no way to know if these players would join Liverpool, and there’s a chance that most, if not all, will already be on the club’s radar, but still, it’s a bit of fun eh?
We asked fans to give us three names of players they’d like Liverpool to target in the January window. We did caveat it with the word ‘realistically’ though, as we’re pretty sure that Cristiano, Lionel, Luis (sigh!) won’t be looking to join Liverpool this winter.
30 Liverpool fans each sent in three names (some sent in the odd one more, so we decided to be nice and include these too, it’s Christmas after all), and we tallied them up and here’s what we got:
– 51 different players were voted for.
– Of these 51 players, 21 were voted for by more than one person.
– Petr Cech & Wilfred Bony both received six votes each, more than any other players.
– Asmir Begovic and Alexandre Lacazette received five votes each, while Yevhen Konoplyanka received four.
So, if these 30 fans each got into a room and voted on who to sign this January, it looks like Liverpool would go after Cech, Bony and Lacazette. If these deals fell through, Begovic & Konoplyanka would be back up options, along with about twenty other players!
If anyone wants to give Brendan, Ian & the scouts a call and let them know that we’ve done their job for them, feel free.
