Five reasons for Liverpool’s January slump

After Liverpool’s EFL Cup exit at the hands of Southampton marked the continuation of their January woes, I’ve examined the reasons behind a costly slump.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have won just one of their seven games this month, scraping past Plymouth in an FA Cup replay, and have seen their Premier League title hopes dealt a potentially fatal blow, with leaders Chelsea now ten points ahead.

The Reds had enjoyed a fantastic start to the season, defying the initial doubters to emerge as clear title contenders after a series of emphatic victories.

Two games remain this month: an FA Cup 4th Round clash with Championship side Wolves on Saturday before a potentially season-defining meeting with Chelsea at Anfield in midweek.

By February 1st, then, Liverpool’s hopes of ending their five-year trophy drought will either have been dashed or reignited.
