For the final home match against a hated rival, it proved a tepid match. With the Europa League final looming a week away, Liverpool lacked any edge or urgency as they snatch a share of the points, drawing late against Chelsea 1-1.
Despite being the final appearance at Anfield, the Reds never ramped up to full speed. In some ways, it reminded of some earlier performances in the season where they looked too soft and too slow. Effort remained and Liverpool never completely packed it in but getting stuck in second gear meant a lack of quality on the night.
Clearly an end of season affair between two teams with little to play for, even the bitterness that has built between these two teams did not spirit enough to keep it all that interesting. Falling behind left Liverpool chasing for long stretches of the match.
In truth, Christian Benteke’s stoppage time equaliser was a gift from Chelsea goalkeeper Asmir Begovic misplaying a ball right onto his head. It was no match for the superb solo effort by Eden Hazard, as he left a raft of Reds in his wake before sliding the ball just inside the far post.
Here are four findings from the match.
