Four Findings: Liverpool 1-1 Manchester City (1-3 on pens)

Liverpool’s opportunity for silverware looked bound to fizzle in a familiar way. The Reds lacked incision up front and made costly errors in the back, until Philippe Coutinho breathed life into the Reds with a late equaliser to earn extra time. Yet Liverpool ultimately fall to capitalise at 1-1 and fell to Manchester City 3-1 on pens, at Wembley Stadium in the Capital One Cup final.

Despite a healthy Daniel Sturridge, Liverpool continued to look like they had no goals in them. The Merseysiders did not even put a shot on target until Coutinho’s 83th minute strike. City’s defence stood tall, slowed, and absorbed Liverpool’s attack.

Then, apart from Emre Can’s cheeky pen, the rest of Liverpool’s penalty takers could not convert. All the bravery and fight Liverpool displayed in the match heartbreakingly ebbed away in a cruel turn of fate. The third penalty shoot-out would not prove a charm.

Here are four findings from the match.
