Opening a new campaign at Wembley is a welcome beginning for the European Champions. Facing their newly-minted arch rival Manchester City also provides an auspicious start. The only misfortune was not winning, as City secures the the Community Shield 1-1 (5-4 PENS).
The Reds started unevenly, at times even looking ropey. An early injury to Leroy Sané, who showed no hint of heading home to Germany, stopped the match just as it was beginning to take shape.
A sleepy restart upon the substitution left Liverpool down a goal and needing a shakeup. They eventually found their way back into the match and finished the first half strongly.
Apart front a couple of minor chances that likely would have been offside anyway, the Reds dominated the second half. While they eventually found the equalizer, they should have likely scored three were it not for lacking season sharpness in front of goal.
Still, the Community Shield is a trophy if brought home and preseason fixture if not. Next week’s Super Cup should sparkle more anyway.
Here are four findings from the match.
