Former Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher delivers a raw reaction to Mohamed Salah’s shock Liverpool exit on The Overlap. The Reds legend believes replacing the Egyptian is an “impossible” task for the recruitment team.

Sat alongside the likes of Gary Neville and Roy Keane, who featured for Liverpool’s arch rivals Manchester United for all of their careers, the Liverpool-born defender offered his take on the unique Salah situation.

He hasn’t been alone in offering his thoughts on the Egyptian calling time on his esteemed nine-year stay at Anfield, with the current crop under Arne Slot – such as Andy Robertson – noting that the 255-goal hero is “one of the best ever” to grace the turf.

Other former Liverpool royalty, such as Graeme Souness, have taken a more blunt approach, with the outspoken Scotsman commenting on the logistical mess that the deal is, with Salah walking away for nothing.

Carragher falls more into the Robertson category, which isn’t a surprise, considering the Liverpool-born defender has gone on record to state that only Arsenal great Thierry Henry ranks higher in his all-time Premier League attacker rankings.

While appearing on the Overlap, the passionate pundit was even more complimentary.

Carragher’s comments about Salah leaving

Earlier in the season, though, Salah was subject to Carragher’s wrath, when the Egyptian publicly fell out with Slot.

Indeed, Carragher would brand the magical number 11 as a “disgrace” regarding his comments that Slot had “thrown him under the bus” during Liverpool’s dismal run late in 2025.

Thankfully, this fractious relationship between the Dutchman and the 33-year-old was quickly patched up, but Carragher believes this is still the perfect opportunity for the long-standing servant to call time on his distinguished Reds career.

After all, Salah has only amassed a weak five goals this season in the Premier League, as he begins to show signs of visible decline.

He said, when quizzed by Keane and Neville: “I was out having a meal for my Dad’s birthday, and I got a text message, just as it went through on his socials.

I think it’s the right decision for everyone, really. I think it’s good you know the way he did it, international break, no games around, gives everyone time to prepare, to move on. Yeah, it’s right for everyone.

We’re losing a superstar right now. I think there’s a real lack of Salahs in the Premier League right now, so it will be a bad miss, and naturally, when you announce you’re retiring, or moving on, you don’t think of now. You think back, don’t you? You think, wow, you look back on the numbers and all he’s achieved.”

Salah’s announcement has led many Liverpool fans to wander down memory lane, with the 33-year-old untouchable at points, during his peak on Merseyside.

But, as Carragher has suggested, this is likely the best time for Salah to call time on his nine-year journey, before he further becomes a shadow of his former self, as he aims to bow out in style between now and the season’s end.
