Steven Gerrard believes that Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool were too overconfident when they played Chelsea in April 2014, a game that led to Liverpool’s league chances slipping away.
The game is best remembered for Gerrard’s slip, which presented Demba Ba with a one-on-one chance with Simon Mignolet, which the striker coolly put away.

Chelsea went on to score a second late in the game to seal the victory, and when Manchester City defeated Crystal Palace later that day, Liverpool’s title dreams were all but over. The infamous 3-3 draw at Crystal Palace followed which was pretty much the final nail in the coffin.
In his new book ‘Steven Gerrard: My Story’, which you can win a copy of by clicking here, the ex-Liverpool skipper says that overconfidence was a huge factor in the game.
I’ve never been able to say this in public before but I was seriously concerned that we thought we could blow Chelsea away. I sensed an over-confidence in Brendan’s team talks. We played into Chelsea’s hands. I feared it then and I know it now.
These words will only add to the overwhelming sense of pressure on Rodgers. The Northern Irishman’s future at Anfield has been the talk of the national media all week, with the likes of Carlo Ancelotti and Jurgen Klopp being linked with his job.
