Hughes provides an update on Liverpool’s pursuit of Werner

Liverpool’s pursuit of Timo Werner has “gone quiet”, due to the outbreak of illness currently affecting football and most of the world.

The Reds have been constantly linked with a move for the RB Leipzig star this summer.

Werner has caught the eye this season, scoring 27 goals in all competitions, including one away to Tottenham in the Champions League recently.

Liverpool may have to be patient in their attempts to acquire the 24-year-old’s signature, however.

Speaking on the Red Agenda podcast (24/03/20), The Athletic’s Simon Hughes claimed the virus means talks have stalled a little for the time being.

At the end of February, everybody expected Liverpool to formalise their interest in Timo Werner around this time.

I don’t think there should be too much panic surrounding Liverpool not signing Werner, given the current circumstances. It is fully understandable why transfers have taken a back seat for the time being, but the German surely remains a primary target this summer.

I believe he is the most likely player to join the Reds in the coming months, especially as he reportedly has a release clause that could be triggered.

The likes of Jadon Sancho and Kylian Mbappe represent more expensive options, not to mention the fact Werner himself has talked up a potential move to Anfield in recent months.
