Jayden Danns has suffered a cruel injury setback, having only just made his long-awaited Liverpool U21s return.
While the current predicament at Liverpool is gloomy, as the Reds continue to lose ground in the fierce top-four race in the Premier League, there are some very exciting youth prospects rising through the ranks at Anfield.
Indeed, Rio Nguhoma – who is only 17 years of age – terrorised Tottenham Hotspur all match long last time out, even as Arne Slot’s men had to make do with an underwhelming share of the points, with a tricky seven dribbles successfully pulled off.
The hope will be that the teenage starlet goes on to have a long-lasting career at Liverpool, as another homegrown gem becomes a world-beater at Anfield.
Unfortunately, not every tale involving the next generation at Liverpool is as upbeat as Nguhoma’s, with Jayden Danns’ development on Merseyside ravaged by injuries, as of late.
Danns’ unfortunate injury situation
The Liverpool number 76 is very highly thought of, despite all these injury difficulties troubling his progression.
Across 49 appearances for the U18s and U21s, Danns has bagged a stunning 29 goals and collected six assists, with first-team opportunities coming his way subsequently.
Three goals have since fallen into his lap from ten senior outings, with Danns even becoming Liverpool’s youngest ever starter in the Champions League in January 2025.
This is all sounding pretty rosy so far, but consistent spells in the Anfield treatment room, as of late, have soured his development.
Danns had been completely absent from action in the U21 ranks since last September, after suffering from a serious hamstring issue.
He had been back in training earlier this month, with Slot potentially looking at the dazzling attacker as another option he can throw into senior action.
Another setback has emerged for the 20-year-old after he was forced off with a suspected hamstring issue during a Premier League 2 clash away at Manchester City.
Featuring for Rob Page’s U21 side, the injury-prone youngster lasted less than 30 minutes before being withdrawn, adding to growing concerns over his fitness.
His early exit proved a blow for his side, who went on to suffer a 2-0 defeat, with the latest issue raising further doubts about his ability to maintain a consistent run of games.
Page came out afterwards to state that they’ll know more about Dann’s long-term situation in time, but hopefully, it was just a precautionary measure to protect the unlucky attacker.
He said: “We’ll know more in 24 hours, but it was probably precautionary as well.
He’s felt something, to what extent, we don’t know, but I think he’s done the sensible and right thing to do.
He could have played on for the first half, but I think the sensible thing to do for his development now and for his future is for him to come off.”
For his sake, it’s hopefully just a minor bump in the road, and he can reignite his senior career shortly.
With Liverpool’s fortunes at the moment, and Nguhoma’s sudden rise, Danns does seriously stand a chance of being an impactful presence in the men’s team under Slot.
But, for now, he will need to bounce back from another setback.
