Liverpool may choose not to sign a new centre-back in January

Liverpool may choose not to sign a new centre-back in January, despite the injury to Virgil van Dijk.

That’s according to the Liverpool Echo, who claim that Jurgen Klopp could be content with the options at his disposal.

Van Dijk’s long-term absence has left Liverpool with only Joel Matip and Joe Gomez as established available centre-backs, while Fabinho can also fill in capably in that area.

The Reds have been linked with moves for the likes of Ozan Kazak, Dayot Upamecano and Kalidou Koulibaly in January, but it may be that none come to Anfield.

The Echo‘s report simply states that Liverpool ‘may not choose to reassess the centre-back situation as things stand’.

I think there is a definite need for Liverpool to bring in a new central defender, mainly because of Matip’s injury record.

If the Cameroonian was a reliable player in that respect, making do with him, Gomez and Fabinho could arguably work.

He seems incapable of being consistently available, however, highlighting why a new face needs to come in.

Failing to make a January addition, then losing one of Gomez, Matip or Fabinho for a long-term period like Van Dijk, could have a very damaging effect on Liverpool’s Premier League title challenge.

It would feel negligent not to bring in one of the three names mentioned above.
