Liverpool reject Swansea’s bid for Wilson as Derby emerge as favourites

Liverpool have rejected Swansea City’s loan offer for Harry Wilson and Derby County are now favourites to re-sign him, according to The Athletic’s Stuart James on Twitter.

On Wednesday, the Swans emerged as favourites to sign the 23-year-old on a temporary deal, but there has been a quick twist to the story.

It is claimed that Swansea’s bid was a ‘non-starter’ from a financial sense, with Derby leapfrogging them in the reckoning and aiming to bring Wilson back to the club where he spent the 2018/19 season on loan.

There is no agreement in place yet, but it looks as though a deal could happen before Friday’s transfer deadline.

Wilson started Liverpool’s Carabao Cup penalty shootout defeat to Arsenal – his maiden start for the Reds – but Jurgen Klopp has made it clear that he sees no place for him in the squad this season.

It is vital that Wilson seals a move elsewhere by Friday, mainly for his own development and career trajectory.

Staying put at Liverpool would mean endless weeks of not playing first-team football, potentially growing stale in the process.

The hope was that Wilson would exit permanently during the summer – Liverpool reportedly rejected a £12million bid from Burnley – but a loan move appears to be the next best thing.

The Wales international has the quality to be a success elsewhere, scoring 32 goals during loan spells as Hull City, Derby and Bournemouth, but like so many during the Klopp era at Anfield, he doesn’t quite cut the mustard for this great Reds side.
