Liverpool are still very much the team to beat in the Premier League title race, according to Troy Deeney.
The Reds have been rocked by the news that Virgil van Dijk could be out for the rest of the season, with some even writing off their title hopes because of it.
Jurgen Klopp’s champions have won both games in Van Dijk’s absence, however, against Ajax and Sheffield United, with Fabinho and Joe Gomez forging a promising centre-back partnership.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Tuesday [9.10am], the outspoken Deeney explained why Liverpool are still his pick to lift the trophy next May:
I would still say Liverpool. I still think they have got the best XI. I think now if you take one of the front three out and you add Jota to that as well then they still have goals.
I think with what has happened to Van Dijk, they are going to have to go into the market again in January, which would only make them better.
I think you would be foolish not to go for Liverpool.

While Van Dijk is undoubtedly vital to Liverpool – I believe he is their most important player because of his world-class level of consistency and organisation – writing them off because of one injury is ludicrous.
The Reds still arguably have four or five players who are arguably among the best in their positions in Europe, whether it be Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah or Sadio Mane.
This does look as though it could be a crazy Premier League season with unpredictable results, and therefore fewer points for the eventual champions.
I still make Liverpool favourites to retain their crown, however, given the manager and players they have at their disposal.
