Liverpool’s pre-season is officially in the books. The Reds played a total of nine games in three different countries across the course of four weeks, of which they won seven, drew one and lost one.
As is often the case in pre-season, we’ve seen a few players stand out, whilst others have simply maintained their levels, which is no bad thing.
In true 1990’s Chart Show style, I’ve counted down my top five pre-season performers:
5. Sadio Mane
He only joined up with the Reds at the end of the US tour but in his four outings, he looked very, very sharp. He scored two penalties and looked like he’d kept up his great form from the end of last year.
4. Curtis Jones
It’s always good to have a young local player in the Liverpool squad and whilst Trent Alexander-Arnold was having a break, Curtis Jones stepped up to the plate. He showed his quality on numerous occasions and proved that he could have a part to play this season.
3. Nathaniel Phillips
With Liverpool defenders missing time due to injuries and holidays, Nat Phillips saw plenty of game time and for the most part, he stood out. He did have the odd issue due to his inexperience but overall, he impressed a lot.

2. Xherdan Shaqiri
Of all of Liverpool’s new signings, Shaqiri was likely the least heralded but he’s gone a long way to show that he could be a top player for the Reds. Scoring an overhead kick against Manchester United on debut is one way to endear yourself to the fans, whilst his bright performances against Napoli and Torino have got plenty of supporters excited to see what’s next.
1. Daniel Sturridge
I’ve done it again. I’ve been drawn in by Daniel Sturridge! When will I ever learn? The striker has had one of the best pre-seasons he’s ever had. He’s played in a slightly different role and he’s been absolutely superb. He’s found the back of the net on numerous occasions and his all-around play has been of such a high quality. He’s gone from a man who was certain to leave to a player who could play a major role in Liverpool’s season.
