Liverpool centre-half Dejan Lovren may be facing a meaningful amount of time on the treatment table, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Lovren was stretchered off in Liverpool’s League Cup win on penalties against Carlisle United after landing awkwardly and injuring his ankle with suspected ligament damage. The Croatian received oxygen on his way off the pitch.
The coaching staff believe Lovren will be unavailable for at least two months and will have scans to confirm those fears.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers had put faith in the 26-year-old to begin the campaign after a sullen first year on Merseyside.
He had performed respectably, bar a couple of occasions, namely in the home defeat by West Ham, and some poor positioning that led to Carlisle’s equaliser on Wednesday night before he picked up the injury.
Rodgers hadn’t had many injuries to key players in the side to deal with so far this season, as Joe Allen wasn’t expected to be in the team week-in and week-out and Adam Lallana wasn’t away from the pitch for long at all.
Now he has seen captain Jordan Henderson be ruled out for two months rather than day-to-day, Christian Benteke picking up a hamstring injury, which are never not serious, and now Lovren.
All the while just as Daniel Sturridge was meant to rejuvenate the side with his return.
