In Liverpool’s shocking 3-0 home defeat at the hands West Ham United, Dejan Lovren fell in line with an extensive collection of disappointing performances from Liverpool players.
But the Croatian insists that no one was more disenchanted with his performance than the player himself.
Lovren explained his frustrations to Liverpoolfc.com, particularly West Ham’s second goal, which was heavily influenced by an intemperate defensive error by the centre-half.
“I’m the first one who is disappointed with myself,” Lovren said.
Of course for the first minute after the second goal I wanted to go under the table. What can I do?
The 26-year-old offered no remonstrance nor excuses for the match. He accepts there were blunders, but both he and the team will attempt bounce back.
“A game like this, it happens,” said Lovren. “Mistakes happen and they were cheap goals. But I don’t think it will shake myself and the team so we will go again straight away to find our form and win at Manchester United.”
Liverpool’s No.6 has already put this poor performance in the rear view and is ensuring to look forward, not back.
“The game is finished. I’ve forgotten it already. Now it is the national team and in two weeks we have Manchester United.”
Lovren arrived at Anfield from Southampton in the summer of 2014 for a £20m fee – the most money the Reds have ever spent on a defender.
He flattered to deceive throughout his first term under Brendan Rodgers but looked to have turned the corner as he put in three assured displays against Stoke City, Bournemouth, and Arsenal respectively this season.
But the poor performance against West Ham will pile the pressure back onto Lovren, particularly with Mamadou Sakho waiting in reserve.
