In most recently plying his trade for Manchester City, James Milner knows better than everyone, bar Joe Hart, what it’s like to be on the wrong end of a Philippe Coutinho world class winner.
In speaking with liverpoolfc.com, Milner enjoyed it much more wearing the same shirt as the Brazilian.
“I obviously saw him do it a few times last year – so to do it when he was on my team was nicer!” said Milner.
Liverpool’s new number 7 knew they would need some magic to win that match, thankfully Coutinho picked the rabbit out of his hat.
“It was going to take a moment of brilliance to win the game and we managed to get that,” Milner added.
Milner continued to praise his new side’s win at the difficult Britannia.
“It’s never an easy place to come and especially for the first game of the season. The crowd is always good here and they were obviously going to be up for it,” said Milner.
In his first match as a Red and vice-captain Milner felt proud, but plays down the role.
“It’s an amazing honour. Liverpool is an amazing club to be at,” Milner said. “I don’t think it will change my role in any way; you need a lot of captains, vice-captains and leaders and people who are going to talk and help each other out.”
Liverpool and Milner next play on Monday 17 August, against Bournemouth at Anfield.
