Motson: Conspiracy against Rodgers

BBC broadcaster and commentator John Motson believes that there is a conspiracy against Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.

Speaking on the Monday Night Club radio show, Motson said:

I think there’s some kind of conspiracy going on against Brendan Rodgers. Every time I read an article about Liverpool, and I appreciate there’s a lot of their ex-players in the media now which may have something to do with it, it seems like there’s always somebody digging away at him.

Rodgers has come under huge scrutiny recently as Liverpool have failed to win any of their last four matches, and a quick look on social media is enough to see that there are many Liverpool fans who’d like to see the back of him.

However, Motson, who is best known for his role commentating on Match of the Day, thinks the criticism is too harsh, and perhaps too early:

Two years ago he nearly won the league. He then loses, for different reasons, [Luis] Suarez, [Raheem] Sterling, [Daniel] Sturridge and [Steven] Gerrard, that’s four pretty big players, I think that’s fair to say.

He then goes out this summer and buys six new players, who’ve so far have only played five or six games, and there’s the [Jordan] Henderson injury to add to all that.

Yet, they’re niggling away at him all the time, What do Liverpool seriously expect? They haven’t won the league for over 20 years. I think there’s an agenda there, and I think there’s certain people driving it.

On the surface, Motson’s comments do make some sense. Rodgers has had to deal with a lot of change at Liverpool, and he has lost many of his best players.

However, it appears that Liverpool fans do not have the same level of understanding and maybe patience that he does. Also, Rodgers’ team selections and formations seem to be frustrating many.

Motson’s accusation of “certain people” driving an agenda against Rodgers is something that will raise some eyebrows, especially as he is highly-regarded in the media and he could possibly have contacts who have heard some rumblings.
