Opinion: Greatest Liverpool footballers of all time

#5. Jamie Carragher

Carragher was signed to Liverpool in 1996 until he retired in 2013. He is one of Liverpool’s greatest defenders. He also played for England’s national team for ten years. Carragher could play both as a centre back and a right back. When he partnered with Finland’s Sami Hyypia, they formed one of the greatest defensive duos in the English league. He has played 737 matches for the Reds and has scored five goals. He helped the team win the 2005 UEFA Premier League and two FA Cups.

#4. Graeme Souness.

Scotland is proud of one of its very own who played for Liverpool. The club signed him in 1978 until 1984. Souness was known for his hard tackles and excellent leadership skills while he was on the pitch. He could play both as a box-to-box one and a defender. During his career at Liverpool, he helped the club become one of the most active teams in Europe in the 1980s. He won five league titles and three European Cups.

#3. Steven Gerrard

When Steven Gerrard joined Liverpool in 1998, he went on to play for them for 18 consecutive seasons. Steven could play three positions on the field; box-to-box midfielder, striker and as a defender. During the FA Cup final in 2006, he made one of the most memorable goals against West Ham FC. Steven played in 710 matches for Liverpool and scored 186 goals for them. He also played for the English national team for more than a decade. When he left the club in 2015, it was an emotional goodbye.

#2. Ian Rush

Ian Rush is one of the greatest strikers to have ever played for Liverpool. He joined the Reds in 1980 but left the club in 1986 for Juventus. After playing for one season for Juventus, he moved back to Liverpool where he played for them until 1996. The helm of his career was marked when he scored what is considered one of the most critical goals in Liverpool history. During the FA Cup final in 1986, he scored the winning goal for Liverpool against Everton FC. He is the highest goal scorer in Liverpool history with 346 goals.

#1. Sir Kenny Dalglish

King Kenny is the greatest player in Scotland and Liverpool. He scored the winning goal during the European Cup final in the 1977/1978 season. He retired in 1990 after playing in 502 matches and scoring 169 goals.
