Liverpool’s Harry Wilson, on loan at Derby County, was the talk of the English football on Tuesday evening as he put in a Man of the Match performance and scored a magnificent free-kick at Old Trafford as Frank Lampard’s side knocked Manchester United out of the Carabao Cup.
I thought it would be a good idea to see how the youngster has been getting on at Derby, so I spoke about him with my fellow Fresh Press Media employee, and huge Derby fan, Becca Hawksworth.
Here’s what she had to say:
So Becca, what was it like being in the away end at Old Trafford when Wilson scored that free-kick?
The away end when Wilson scored that free-kick was just unbelievable. Everyone just went absolutely mental. I don’t think any of us expected him to even try and go for goal himself from that distance, let alone bury it in the top corner. As soon as it hit the back of the net the scenes in our end were crazy. I could have quite easily have fallen down a couple of rows in the celebrations because all of our fans were just all over the place!
That was the first time I’ve watched Derby this season and Wilson played really well, has he been that good in all of his games so far?
Wilson was one of our standout players in pre-season but was a bit quieter in our opening couple of games. He spent a couple of weeks at the beginning of the months sidelined with a slight injury but has come back from that and has really started to find his form. He was fantastic for us against Brentford in the Championship at the weekend – he never stopped running, wasn’t afraid to take players on and got our opening goal of the game. And of course, that performance carried through into the United match. Us Derby fans are all really impressed by him. He definitely has a big future ahead of him.

It looks like he and Mason Mount have formed a good partnership together, is that something Derby fans have noticed too?
Absolutely. Both players have come to us hoping to get regular game time and really prove their worth and so far, they have both certainly done just that. It’s clear they have a good understanding of where the other is on the pitch and where he will want the ball. They compliment each other very well and together look a real attacking threat each time one of them is on the ball.
I’m guessing promotion is the aim for the Rams this season. If they are to achieve that aim, how big a part do you think Wilson will need to play?
Frank Lampard and our chairman have not hidden the fact that promotion is the ultimate aim this season and Wilson will need to play a huge role for us if that is to happen. We have several good attacking wingers in our squad but I would expect Wilson, if he maintains his form, to be a regular starter for us. He’s quick and direct which suits how Lampard is trying to get us to play this season. Hopefully, Wilson will be able to chip in with a couple more goals too to really give us a push for promotion this season.
