Reds set to bid for Matip

Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp reportedly wants to improve his back-line following his side’s recent defensive woes and BILD believe that he will do this by adding Schalke centre-back Joel Matip to his squad.

According to the German publication, Klopp seems keen to bring in the Cameroonian defender but it remains unclear whether the former Borussia Dortmund manager will attempt to sign the defender in the upcoming transfer window or wait until the summer when Joel Matip will become a free agent.

Matip, 24, has already turned down a contract from his current club which would’ve kept him at the VELTINS-Arena until 2020.

Schalke general manager Horst Heldt confirmed to BILD that the two representatives will hold talks over his future during the winter break:

Our competition [to keep Matip] is tough. We have agreed with his consultants that in January, we will make a decision.

With Martin Skrtel leaving the game with Watford with an injury, Dejan Lovren out with a lacerated knee and Joe Gomez out for the season, Klopp may be forced to bring in reinforcements as soon as the window opens.
