More of the same is what many supporters must be muttering after Liverpool crashed out of the Carabao Cup in their first match. Despite claims of respecting the tournament, the much-changed Reds side should have been strong enough to win but faltered badly, losing to Leicester City 2-0 at the King Power Stadium.
A campaign on four fronts now drops to three and Liverpool may already be facing a critical moment. After the merciless defeat against Manchester City in the league, the Reds have slid into a run of form that has produced nothing but costly results. In each of the subsequent three matches since City, they have been void of ruthlessness on one end and prone to errors on the other. Their encouraging start has quickly stumbled (L-D-D-L).
Barring the aberrant 10-man defeat at the Etihad, Liverpool have created more than enough chances but faltered in the finishing department. Meanwhile, at the back, a catalogue of errors keeps them comically far from a clean sheet. What is most concerning is that these last four fixtures have revealed such similar results despite significant personnel changes.
Still, the club’s form is so much not in crisis as it has simply been bang average. Unfortunately, as the matches continue to come thick and fast, Liverpool has yet to find the remedy to wrest the flailing. With each missed opportunity, points are dropped and the margin for error shrinks. Points lost can prove precious far faster than anyone would like.
Here are four findings from the match.
