Four Findings: Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Liverpool

In what is already shaping up to be a critical section of Liverpool’s season, the Reds beat Tottenham Hotspur in London 1-2 to restart the Premier League after the international break.

Liverpool blitzed Spurs early, creating two chances in the first three minutes with an opening goal being pulled back for Sadio Mané attempting a touch in an offside position. The start showed that the side is beginning to find some rhythm going forward. In fact, the Reds were so dominant the home side seemed unaware the match had begun for the first 10 minutes or so.

Liverpool should have struck for the lead in the 23rd minute, when Mo Salah picked off an errant back pass, splitting the Spurs defence. However, he failed to finish and drove the ball right at Spurs’ backup goalkeeper Michael Vorm.

Eventually, the Reds broke through when Gigi Wijnaldum headed home a corner in the 39th minute, helped by the coastline technology confirmation.

The second half started with action at both ends before Roberto Firmino doubled Liverpool’s advantage in the 54th minute, tapping in a goalmouth scramble. From then, the Reds reasserted their dominance, despite a couple of injury stoppages that saw Roberto Firmino leave after an accidental poke in the eye.

The only blemish was conceding a very late goal from a corner, which barely threatened to make things interesting. The scoreline flattered Spurs and shows the Reds still have room to improve.

Here are four findings from the match.
