Work starts on new Liverpoool training complex

Liverpool announced on Twitter today that work has begun on the building of the club’s new training complex.

The work will redevelop the academy site and make the first-team and youth sides have one combined training facility for the first ever time at Liverpool.

The complex will span over 9,200 square metres and feature facilities such as new pitches, two gyms and specialist sports rehabilitation suites.

Manager Jurgen Klopp said:

It’s a really big statement of the club and the owners that we do that today and I’m really happy that we start, because it’s not normal I would say.

He added:

We are in a situation where we are currently OK. Melwood is a wonderful place, we love it. Kirkby is a wonderful place, we love it. But bringing them together is a step into the future, which we all need.

The community fields adjacent to the academy site are also being improved with upgraded football pitches, new changing rooms and facilities plus enhanced security, lighting and a new pedestrian and cycle pathway.

The improvements will conclude later this year and the football pitches will be available around August 2019.

The entire process is expected to be finished in the spring of 2020 with the first-team moving from Melwood during the close season.
