The better team to be sure but far from good enough to make it count. No one played poorly, although no one played well enough to make a difference either.
Overall, the side played well. In fact, there were moments where they played exceptionally well, but could not make the most of it. The longer it went scoreless the more vulnerable Liverpool looked to receive a smash-and-grab lesson.
David de Gea was tested but passed. After a lengthy drought, the much-maligned Wayne Rooney scored his fifth goal in his last four competitive matches. It was United’s only shot on target, but it was all they needed.
Meanwhile, Liverpool began their 22nd match with a side that has tallied a mere six league goals in total. Adding substitute Benteke doubled the total to a meagre 12 combined goals, hardly enough to threaten even a weak Manchester United side.
