Liverpool are currently 1-0 down against Villarreal after a terrible start to the first half at Anfield.
Georges Mikautadze scored the solitary goal of the game in the opening exchanges after what was a rare moment of madness from captain Virgil van Dijk.
The Dutch international’s tame header back to Alisson Becker was intercepted by Mikautadze, who did the rest from close range.
And Alan Shearer feels the Liverpool captain endured a nightmare start to the game, putting the Reds in the back seat.
Alan Shearer slams Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk
“Liverpool’s back four made an absolute mess of it after 30 or 40 seconds, and an absolute nightmare from Van Dijk,” said Shearer via the BBC.
“A clear header, you can see what he’s trying to do. It wasn’t a great clearance from Alisson, and then the ball gets played over the top by [Villarreal], and really under no pressure at all, Van Dijk just tries to guide it back to Alisson and gets it all wrong.
“And then the touchdown, and you’re thinking, can he finish it off, and he did it brilliantly.”
Van Dijk has looked uncharacteristically sloppy in the first half as the Reds trail at home in Europe. However, they have enough time to turn it around and could turn to their game to influence proceedings in the second half.
