Andoni Iraola shares what he really thinks about Florian Wirtz at Liverpool

Andoni Iraola shares what he really thinks about Florian Wirtz at Liverpool

In recent weeks, a lot has been said about Florian Wirtz’s Liverpool career so far.

The German international took a while to get going after his big-money move last summer but finally came to life during the second half of the season under Arne Slot.

However, under Andoni Iraola, he hasn’t found his best form and produced a lacklustre display vs Manchester City.

Jamie Carragher criticised the German international, while Steven Gerrard urged Liverpool to keep faith in him.

And now, Andoni Iraola feels it makes no sense to dwell on every individual performance, be it Wirtz or anyone else.

“When you are in a big club like we are, if you don’t have a good performance,” said Iraola in his pre-match press conference.

“He had good performances for the national team. He scored a goal. He will have better and worse games.

“I’d look at it more collectively and how we can play well and get results. It’s a more collective thing. [Wirtz and Barcola] have had good games and bad games like anyone else and they will give us good games.”

It goes without saying that Wirtz hasn’t satisfied expectations since his move to Anfield. However, Iraola clearly has a lot of faith in him, so the Liverpool faithful will hope he clicks into gear in the coming weeks.
