Ex-Liverpool full back Alvaro Arbeloa is set to reject advances from London pair Chelsea & Arsenal and return to Anfield in the January transfer window according to the Express.
The former fans favourite has grown frustrated in recent months with his lack of game time for the Spanish giants Real Madrid. Arbeloa has had to play second fiddle to the impressive Dani Carvajal this term and reports in Spain are that the former international wants to jump ship this month.
Arbeloa was heavily linked with moves to Chelsea and Arsenal in the summer but reportedly it’s the player himself who is holding out for move back to familiar ground with Liverpool were the Champions League winner enjoyed a two and a half year stint between 2007 and 2009.
Making his League debut against Newcastle as a substitute for Jermaine Pennant on the 10 February 2007, Arbeloa quickly cemented himself as an important part of then Liverpool’s manager Rafael Benitez’s squad. His most notable appearance came in a famous win at Camp Nou when he was applauded for his job on man marking Lionel Messi.
It’s believed that the current Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers sees the experienced defender as a perfect replacement for the soon to be out of contract England international Glen Johnson. Although Liverpool did secure the services of fellow countryman Javier Manquillo on a two year loan in the summer, the youngster hasn’t done enough just yet to convince Rodgers that he a natural successor to Johnson.
Rodgers would see a move for Alvaro Arbeloa as the perfect short term solution for Liverpool’s right back situation until the backroom staff could line up a more long term successor.
