Can: We owe the fans

Liverpool midfielder Emre Can believes the team need to make up for the humiliation on the final day of last season, for the sake of the fans.

The Reds suffered from a slow start in the previous season after they accumulated only seven points from their first six matches.

This had an adverse effect on their Champions League hopes as Brendan Rodgers’ side finished sixth in the league.

Can, in an interview on Liverpoolfc.com, said that the players owe the fans a better start this season and wants to hit the ground running starting with a victory against Stoke City at the Britannia stadium on Sunday.

“I’m always fully-motivated for every game, and the start of the season especially so.

“I hope I can get the goal tally started quickly. We didn’t end the last season particularly well, and I think we owe it to the fans to make amends.

“This is why the first few matches are especially important. I think we can start to put [the Stoke result] right with a few good results.”

The German Under-21 international was part of the squad that was beat 6-1 by Mark Hughes’ side on the last day of the previous season and was subbed off at half-time.

However, it was a satisfactory debut campaign on Merseyside for the 21-year-old as he amassed 27 league appearances and he vowed to continue his progress.

“I want to stay fit healthy and in form – that’s always the most important goal to set oneself,” he added.

“I want to play as often as possible, and to have a good consistent season-long run of games.

“I’m certainly planning to score a few good goals!”

The former Bayer Leverkusen player even suggested that Liverpool may be back in title contention this season:

“I think if we can start well and get a few good results under our belt, we can then keep our focus on each match as it comes, and hopefully compete for the title.

“We’ll wait and see just how far we can get in terms of a title race.”
