Jamie Carragher says the arrival of Joe Gomez from Charlton Athletic could jeapordise the future of another young Liverpool defender, Andre Wisdom.
Carragher said on his Kicca page that Gomez’s signing might be bad news for Wisdom, who spent last season on loan at West Bromwich Albion and signed a new contract with the Reds recently.
“Gomez’s arrival,” Carragher said, “Especially with him being able to play right-back and centre-back, means there will be question marks now over Andre Wisdom’s future and having been on loan for the last couple of years I’m sure he will want regular football.”
The ex-Liverpool man also noted that many promising defenders have failed to break through at Anfield in recent years.
“There have been plenty of young defenders signed over the last decade or so for Liverpool who’ve never quite made the grade,” he said. “(Gabriel) Palletta, (Sebastian) Coates, (Danny) Wilson, (Daniel) Ayala, (Mikel) San José and (Tiago) Ilori, who still has time to change that.
“It basically comes from a lack of game time, but crucially (also) not taking their chance on the rare occasions they were chosen.”
“Some have gone on to have good careers, but Liverpool sign players to play for us, not to develop them for others.”
But Carragher is optimistic and believes Gomez could could be the one to buck that trend.
“Hopefully Joe Gomez will change that. He’s an England U19 international and has performed well for Charlton Athletic so comes with a good pedigree.”
