David James has stated that the main reason for Liverpool’s failings last season was striker Daniel Sturridge’s persistent injury layoffs.
In fact, the former Liverpool ‘keeper reckons the lack of playing time from Sturridge was more of a defining factor than the sale of Luis Suárez.
In an appearance in a Talksport programme called The Sports Bar, James said:
“The key player for Liverpool was Daniel Sturridge. He scored more vital goals than Luis Suárez.
“Most of Suárez’s goals were scored in 2-0 or 3-0 wins when only the first goal mattered. Sturridge scoring in a 1-0 win was more important than Suárez scoring a hat-trick in a 5-0 victory.
“Having Sturridge injured for so long in the season was more detrimental than losing Suárez.”
In the 2013-14 season, in which Liverpool finished second in the league, Suárez and Sturridge scored 52 of Liverpool’s 101 league goals.
The departure of Suárez coupled with Sturridge’s multiple injuries saw Liverpool score only 52 goals in the league this season.
