Gary Neville hails Trent Alexander-Arnold an ‘absolute phenomenon’

Liverpool have certainly become a force to be reckoned with under the stewardship of Jurgen Klopp in recent years and much of that improvement is down to their attacking full-backs.

Costing a combined £8million from Hull City (BBC) and the club’s academy respectively, Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold have somewhat reinvented the position under the German manager.

One man who can speak from experience of being a top-flight full-back is ex-Manchester United right-back, Gary Neville.

Speaking on the Sky Sports podcast, Neville was full of praise for the duo in the aftermath of a 2-2 draw against Tottenham.

I don’t think I’ve seen two full-backs play in the Premier League that are as good as these two as a pair. The way in which they combine on the pitch, the way they play the game, they’re an absolute joy. Robertson with his consistency does everything well. Defends well, he’s competitive – slightly too much at the end – but he scored a goal and set up a goal. Alexander-Arnold is an absolute phenomenon when it comes to the quality of his passing, his delivery. It’s something I’ve never seen before from a full-back.

The 46-year-old went on to describe the contribution as ‘unbelievable’ before likening Alexander-Arnold to playing ‘[Kevin] De Bruyne, [David] Beckham or [Steven] Gerrard’ at right-back.

So far this season the 23-year-old has scored twice and provided 11 assists in 19 appearances across all competitions.

Valued at £67.5million and under contract at Anfield until 2025 (Transfermarkt), Kopites can look forward to many more years of watching one of their own marauding down the wing.

Add the Englishman’s talents to that of Robertson on the opposing flank Liverpool have a serious attacking threat from both sides.

There is no doubt about it, this side are capable of achieving new heights this season and any trophy success will likely stem from contributions from their flying full-backs.
