Gomez happy in unfamiliar position

Liverpool’s Joe Gomez says he’s happy to show versatility if it helps him get on the field more.

When Liverpool signed the 18-year-old, he was meant to be a centre-back for the future. He only played full-back once last season.

Since going on Liverpool’s pre-season tour, he’s impressed at both left and right full-back.

“[The manager] said that it’s good that I’m able to play at either [position] and obviously I need to keep learning and just trying to progress so it gives me a good opportunity to try and get the games,” Gomez told LFCtour.com.

The general feeling upon his transfer from Charlton to Liverpool that this was one for the future and he’d be out on loan this season, but Brendan Rodgers squashed those ideas. He’s publically ruled that out, saying “he’s staying. I’ve seen enough in this period.”

In response to Rodgers’ comments, Gomez said: “That was my aim so it was positive to hear that but now I’ve still got a lot of work to do to try and compete here and try and get involved in the squad.”

Centre-back is a potentially weak yet dense position for the Reds with Mamadou Sakho, Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren and Kolo Toure all thought to be ahead of new boy Gomez.

He looks to take advantage of the current less populated full-back ranks.

Gomez made 21 appearances in the Championship for Charlton last year, where he won the club’s Young Player of the Year award.
