Henderson wanted joint Champions League trophy lift with pair

Jordan Henderson has revealed that he wanted James Milner and Jurgen Klopp to join him in lifting the Champions League trophy.

Henderson enjoyed the greatest night of his career on June 1st, as Liverpool secured European glory after beating Tottenham 2-0 in Madrid.

Having received much criticism over the years, it was a special moment for the 29-year-old, who was been such an impressive captain since replacing Steven Gerrard in the role.

His classy character has been highlighted in his behaviour leading up to lifting the trophy aloft.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Henderson said he was keen on vice captain Milner and manager Klopp sharing the honour with him:

I felt myself, Millie and the gaffer should have lifted it together.

I asked Millie and the gaffer because I felt as though Millie is a big part of the squad.

I know I wear the armband when I play but he wore it a lot when I haven’t been playing.

He is a big part of the dressing room. Without him it would have been different – and the manager.

What we did that night wouldn’t have been possible without the manager. But he said no. I hadn’t planned it

For me, the photo would have meant the same if the manager was lifting the trophy and I was stood behind him.

Milner made a brilliant response to Henderson’s plan, saying:

If anyone other than you lifts up that trophy they are getting f—— wrestled to the ground.

It is only right that the midfielder had his moment in the sun, especially after so much negativity throughout his career.

He is now one of only five men to lift the European Cup in a Liverpool shirt, joining the illustrious quartet of Emlyn Hughes, Phil Thompson, Graeme Souness and Gerrard.
