Arsenal and France legend Thierry Henry has told Sky Sports Live that he believes that, of all the strikers currently playing in the Premier League, Liverpool’s new record foreign signing Christian Benteke is the one he’d pick as a striker partner at the moment.
The Belgian striker completed a move to Anfield recently for £32.5m, making him the second most expensive player in Liverpool’s history, behind only Andy Carroll.
Since moving to the Premier League from Genk in 2012, Benteke has gained widespread plaudits for his goalscoring exploits, which earned him a big-money move to Merseyside this summer, ending three years at Aston Villa.
And now Henry has praised him even further, with the Frenchman saying that he’d pick the 24-year-old as his strike partner – high praise indeed, considering talents like Sergio Aguero and Diego Costa are also plying their trade in the most popular league in the world.
Henry himself scored over 200 goals playing for Arsenal during an eight-year period (and a small loan back to the Emirates in 2012).
Since retirement, he’s become a pundit on Sky Sports, and it was at an event put on by that organisation that he told the audience he’d pick Benteke as his partner because “they’d work well as a partnership”.
Many are expecting big things from Benteke at Liverpool this season, with ex-England striker Darren Bent even tipping the Belgian star to challenge for the Golden Boot after his huge move to Anfield.
Due to him now being the most expensive player still at the club, he’ll be keen to impress The Kop and Brendan Rodgers, as well as to build on his 13 goals last season.
