Florian Wirtz was in the thick of the action for Liverpool as they secured a 2-0 win against Brighton at Anfield.

The German international’s deflected effort broke the deadlock for the Reds on the night, but it later went down as an own goal from Pascal Gross.

Alexander Isak scored a second shortly afterwards to give the home side some breathing space as they saw off the win quite comfortably.

And speaking after the game, Wirtz made a rather bullish claim on his critics, which will come as music to the ears of the Anfield faithful.

Florian Wirtz responds to Liverpool criticism

“I don’t pay any attention to it at all,” said Wirtz via Sky Germany when asked about his critics.

“I genuinely couldn’t care less what anyone has to say about me, so anyone is welcome to talk about me. I just play football because I enjoy it and, of course, I want to be successful.”

“Maybe I’m just an interesting guy! I just play my football. If people want to talk about me or judge me, that’s their job. I’m not focusing on that. I just want to play football and I can’t do more [than that].”

Wirtz is letting his football do the talking and has been in fine form over the past month or so.

He picked up an ankle injury during the game and was substituted, but it doesn’t appear to be serious, so he should be good to feature vs Chelsea in midweek.
