Ilori to get Liverpool chance

Tiago Ilori’s father has spoken positively about his son’s future at Liverpool.

The Reds bought the player from Sporting Lisbon in 2013 for £7 million but he is yet to make a first team appearance for them having been on loan at Grenada and Brodeaux.

With Kolo Toure signing an extension and Martin Skrtel considering a new contract, it is hard to see how manager Brendan Rodgers plans to fit the London-born youngster in the team.

But Ilori’s father has told Portugal’s Antena 1 radio: “We spoke to Liverpool last week about Tiago’s future.

“They have said he will be given an opportunity, and will go on the pre-season tour. There are also other clubs interested, like Sunderland.”

If he was to move to Sunderland, it would probably be a loan move and he may even play with fellow Liverpool defender Sebastian Coates, who is on the verge of moving permanently to the Stadium of Light.

Ilori has been playing for the Portugal Under-21s team in the European Championship and has earned plaudits after contributing to two clean sheets.

He will hope to continue that form into pre-season and impress the Liverpool staff.
