Jamie Carragher stunned by what he saw in PSG v Liverpool – “Very worrying”

  • Paris Saint-Germain beat Liverpool 2-0 in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday
  • The Reds hope to turn the tie around in the second leg at Anfield
  • Jamie Carragher is extremely worried about what he saw at the Parc des Princes

Jamie Carragher has hit out at Liverpool after their 2-0 defeat against PSG in the first leg of their Champions League quarter final on Wednesday, 8 April.

Les Parisiens have put one foot in the Champions League semi-finals after taking a two-goal lead in the first leg of their quarter-final tie with Arne Slot’s side.

Luis Enrique side. only need to see out another 90 minutes at Anfield to seal their place in the last four of the competition, as they look to defend their status as European champions.

While Anfield has witnessed several iconic comebacks in its history, PSG will not be too concerned after they denied Slot’s side a single shot on target on Wednesday.

Dominik Szoboszlai is among those expecting a special night in L4 next Tuesday (14 April), but the signs are not promising.

Liverpool looked like lower division team v PSG – Carragher

In a bid to limit damage at the Parc des Princes, Slot switched to a three-man defence, only for the hosts to still score two goals.

The Dutchman’s experiment was a big-time fail, with Liverpool only having Giorgi Mamardashvili’s goalkeeping and Ousmane Dembele’s poor finishing to thank for the scoreline remaining modest.

Carragher is of the view that the Merseyside-based club looked like a ‘lower division team’ facing a side way above them, claiming that the ‘gulf in class’ is worrying for Slot.

He went on to heap praise on PSG and Bayern Munich, who beat Real Madrid 2-1 in the first leg of their tie on Tuesday (7 April), for their brand of football, describing them as a ‘joy to watch’.

Assessing the game, he said (8 April): “What we saw tonight, that was like watching a team from a lower division, playing someone [above them]. The gulf in class was very worrying from a Liverpool point of view, but in terms of football, what we’ve seen tonight from PSG, what we saw last night [7 April] from Bayern Munich was a joy to watch.”

Slot’s omission of Mohamed Salah is abysmal

Not only did Slot drop Mohamed Salah from the starting XI, but he also refused to bring the Egyptian on despite his team being two goals down.

Perhaps even more bizarrely, the former Feyenoord boss took Florian Wirtz off while bringing Alexander Isak on, ensuring that the six-time European champions hardly had any creativity on the pitch to create chances for the Swede.

Slot’s tactics and decisions this season have left a lot to be desired, and it increasingly looks like it is only a matter of time before the Fenway Sports Group pull the plug on him.

Liverpool fans are hopeful that the 47-year-old will be sacked sooner rather than later, as they still have to qualify for the Champions League next season.
