Jones trains with top sprinter

Lloyd Jones is the latest Liverpool youngster to go through extra training sessions before the team converge for pre-season.

Earlier this month, Jordan Ibe was pictured training with Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish while Lloyd Jones has recruited the retired sprinter Katherine Endacott.

Both Endacott and Jones are from Plymouth and that’s where the defender is spending his holidays. He says he wants to be as fit as he can in order to impress Brendan Rodgers when some of the Liverpool players report for duty on July 1.

Fortunately for Jones, he has Commonwealth Games medalist Endacott to help him regain fitness. He told the Plymouth Herald:

“I had a month off and it’s long enough. After about two weeks you want to get back into it.

“Kath Endacott has got me running up the hills to get ready for the start of pre-season. I also go to Brickfields (track) twice a week with her.

“I’m doing short sprints – 20 or 30 metres – because you are not going to run much more than that at a time as a defender. I’m just working on the power in my legs.

“Obviously, I’m quite a big lad and I’m still growing and developing. The more I can get in my legs now I’m sure it will hold me in good stead. Kath works me hard, but it’s fun as well.”

The 19-year-old was bought by Liverpool from Plymouth Argyle for a small fee in May 2011. He established himself in the Under-21s team and was rewarded with a place on the substitute’s bench against Fulham in May 2013.

Last season, he was sent out on loan to League Two sides Cheltenham Town and Accrington Stanley. He signed a new two-year deal last month.

“I had one year left and I’m thankful they gave me an extension. It has put my mind at ease and hopefully I can push on in these two years.

“I will be 21 by the time my contract has ended so I think I will know if they are having me or not by then. We will have to see how it goes.”

matchday.
