Karius looking to secure first-team spot

Loris Karius believes he can leapfrog Simon Mignolet and earn regular Premier League starts if he impresses on the European stage.

Karius is set to make his fourth start of the season on Tuesday night as Liverpool visit Spartak Moscow in the Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp has kept faith with the German, who forfeited the number one spot after an error-strewn start to life at Anfield, but maintains that Simon Mignolet is his first-choice stopper.

Karius, though, says he has an opportunity to prove himself on the biggest stage and change the manager’s mind.

The 24-year-old, as quoted by ESPN, said in the pre-match press conference;

It’s a healthy competition. If you’re at a big club like this then you know there is going to be competition for every spot.

I just see it as a chance when I get to play to prove myself to the manager and use the Champions League as a chance to show him I’m ready for whatever competition.

Klopp is spoilt for choice in the goalkeeping department, with Danny Ward hot on the heels of Mignolet and Karius. The shot-stopper, who spent last season on loan at Huddersfield, featured in Liverpool’s Carabao Cup defeat to Leicester on Tuesday night last week.
