Klopp apologises for playing Henderson in number six role

Jurgen Klopp has revealed he is sorry for playing Jordan Henderson in the “wrong position” after the midfielder impressed in the win over Porto.

Despite playing the majority of his Liverpool career so far in a holding midfielder role, Henderson was given the chance to play more further forward on Tuesday night.

Playing further forward, Henderson impressed. The midfielder set up multiple chances, and assisted Roberto Firmino for the second goal for the Reds.

Speaking after the first leg victory, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp jokingly apologised to Liverpool fans for not playing Henderson further forward more often, and revealed how key the Liverpool captain was in the win over Porto.

Klopp said, via BBC Sport:

Hendo’s a brilliant player, I’m really happy that he can show that again. He likes the position obviously.

It was my fault that for one-and-a-half years he played as a number six. Sorry for that!

But we needed him there. It was a really good performance.

The Reds won 2-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, giving them a big advantage in the second leg.

Naby Keita got the Reds off to a great start in the first half, before Henderson assisted Firmino for the second goal.

Keeping a clean sheet will be a huge bonus for the Reds chances in the second leg, with Porto now without an away goal to take into their home leg.
